Elma M. Rubin

Elma M. Rubin, 99, passed away peacefully June 29, 2015, at War Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Donaldson October 19, 1915, to William and Leticia Beamish, the fourth of 12 children.

While working for the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department in Sault Ste. Marie, she met George Malnar, newly graduated from the Michigan State Police Academy, and they were married November 25, 1936. Mr. Malnar’s career took them to Munising, Iron Mountain, Rockford, Brighton, and, in 1949, St. Ignace.

She was active in her church, school, and community, and helped make curtains for the hospital being built on Burdette Street in St. Ignace in the 1950s. She also participated in a group that would later provide hospice care to area residents.

She enjoyed sewing, knitting, creative crafts, and bridge. In her later years she also tried her hand at golf and cross-country skiing. Her home always welcomed drop-ins, friends, and travelers, and she especially enjoyed entertaining there.

Following the death of Mr. Malnar in 1965, she was employed by First National Bank of St. Ignace. Upon her retirement in 1979, she traveled with friends and enjoyed more time with her children and grandchildren.

She married Lawrence Rubin in 1994 and he preceded her in death 2010.

She had resided at McKinley Manor in Sault Ste. Marie for the past five years.

In addition to two husbands, Mrs. Rubin was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Frederick Case, Jr., and her grandson, Frederick Case, III.

She is survived by her children and their families, Judith Case of Riverdale, Utah, and Richard Malnar of Yucaipa, California; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a sister and her family, Clara and Tom Johndrow of Brimley, and two brothers Earl Beamish of Barbeau and John Beamish of Sault Ste. Marie, and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be at Oakland Chapel Gardens on M-129 Friday, June 10, at 2 p.m.
