Gladys Mills Pope
Gladys Mills Pope passed away Saturday, March 3, 2018, at Evergreen Living Center in St. Ignace. She was 88. She was born October 30, 1929, to John and Mamie (nee Robson) Mills at Hendrick’s Quarry, where her father was employed. She grew up in the Rexton/Garnet area as part of a large, hardworking lumbering family. She married Arnold Pope May 8, 1950, at Trout Lake.
 
Mrs. Pope worked with her husband for many years at the family-owned business, St. Ignace Cleaners. She also worked many years for Arnold Transit Company and was the custodian at LaSalle High School. 
She enjoyed children and all animals, especially horses. She served as the leader of the 4-H Horse Club for many years, and she spent countless hours at county fairs and horse shows.
 
She is survived by two daughters and their families, Ruth LaChapelle of St. Ignace and Patti Hicks of Lansing; four grandsons, Nick and Laurel LaChapelle of Moran, Darren LaChapelle of Cheboygan, Billy and Lindsay Hicks of Lansing and Wesley Hicks, also of Lansing; a great-grandson, Phoenix, and a great-granddaughter, Caia, both of Lansing. She is also survived by three brothers and their families, John and Lorraine Mills of Strongs, Louis and Violet Mills of DeTour, and Art and Dorothy Mills of Rexton, and four sisters and their families, Donna Pope of St. Ignace, Louise Morningstar of Strongs, Leona LaPorte of West Unity, Ohio, and Betty Dean of Conroe, Texas.
 
Mrs. Pope was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; a son, Larry Pope; five sisters, Dorothy Ann Mills, Phyllis Spilak, Alice Gibson, Leta Griffith, and Helen Griffith, and two brothers, Kenneth Mills and Forest Mills. 
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 10, at 11 a.m. at the St. Ignace United Methodist Church with the Reverend Susie Hierholzer officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to time of the service.
Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery in the spring.
 
Memorial contributions may be directed to the St. Ignace Area Community Foundation or the Evergreen Living Center Activities Fund, with envelopes available from Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace, who is assisting the family with arrangements.
