Michael Massey
Died: Saturday, June 30, 2018
Michael Massey, 71, of St. Ignace passed away Saturday, June 30, 2018 surrounded by his family. Mike’s passing was due to complications of ALS/Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Mike was born November 26, 1946 to Herman and Lila (Latva) Massey. He was born and raised in St. Ignace and graduated from LaSalle High School in 1966. In September of 1966 he was drafted into the US Army and was deployed to Viet Nam. Mike served valiantly during his tour of duty earning the Purple Heart and bronze stars, for being wounded in action and his efforts during battle, among other awards and medals.

In 1975 Mike met Nora Winters and they married in April of 1977. Together they raised three sons, David, Mark and Michael. As life sometimes does Mike and Nora were thrown a curve ball and were divorced in 2006. Throughout their years of being divorced and until Mike’s end, they remained very close friends, having a relationship that most people couldn’t understand.

Before retiring from the US Postal Service in 2008 Mike worked various construction and mechanic type jobs. For a time he worked for George’s Auto Salvage and McGregor Oil as a truck driver.

Mike was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians and St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church. He was a former member of the St. Ignace Lions Club and Moran Township School Board Member.

His interests were mainly his family. His pride and joy were his three sons David, Mark and Michael. Mike thoroughly enjoyed attending all the sporting events the three boys were involved in, and rarely missed a game home or away. He also enjoyed taking the family on camping trips and trips to Disney World. Mike enjoyed working on old cars restoring a 1957 Chevrolet and currently had a 1956 Chevrolet that was a work in progress. He was in his happy place tinkering on a project in his garage. In recent years he enjoyed going to the car races in Kinross with his brother John.

He is survived by his former wife Nora Massey, sons David and wife Jasmina of Sault Ste. Marie, Mark and wife Amy, and Michael of St. Ignace; five grandkids, Olivia, Liam, Dylan, Ian and Ava; six brothers and their wives, Jim and Fay, Eddie and Phyliss, Ray and Rose, Clayton and Marianne and John and Lisa; two sisters and their husbands, Carol and Ray Halberg and Katie and Mike Frosland, and sister-in-law Judy Massey, and many nieces and nephews that he thought fondly of. He was preceded in death by his father Herman, his mother Lila and a brother Donald.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 7, at 2 p.m. at Gros Cap Cemetery in Moran Township. A gathering will be held from 1 p.m. to time of the service at the cemetery. Services will be conducted by Father Norbert Landreville and the Viet Nam Veterans of Sault Ste. Marie. The cemetery service will be followed by a Celebration of Life at the home of Nora Massey and Charlie Teney.

The family is requesting memorial contributions be directed to the ALS Association at www.alsa.org.
Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace is assisting the family with arrangements.
