Lawrence "Lumpy" Leveiile

Lawrence "Lumpy" Leveille, 74 Retired Sheriff of Mackinac County passed away Wednesday afternoon at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey following a lingerng illness. He was born in Petoskey, October 2,1943 to CHarles and Frances(Closs) Leveille. He graduated from LaSalle High School in 1962. He was elected Sheriff in 1984 and served the longest of any   serving sheriff. He retired in 2004 He then was elected to the Board of Commissioners of Mackinac County and served 10 years, and one term as Chair.He  started his career in Law Enforcement in 1965 with the ST.Ignace Police Dept. and ran for Sheriff in 1984, after serving 4 years as undersheriff with Ben Thompson. He said "Trying to satisfy people, and working with the people had been rewarding."..He made many improvements in the department, and was  responsible for helping to get SANE started in the county.With a staff of 22 people, and a budget of 1.5 million in revenue, the sheriffs job is of great responsibility. He enjoyed working on the board of commissioners, as most of the staff he alrady knew personaly.He spoke of the nickname Lumpy. It happened in high school. He had two gobs of hair when he sported a cool pompadour hairdo.  One of his classmates said,"Hey look at that lumpy there:". It stuck, and he was always known as "lumpy".He was a lifetime member of ST.Ignatius Church, Knights of Columbus, St.Ignace Lions Club, and an avid golfer. He was also on the Elder Board, Sault Tribe, Unit 3
He married  AraJean Litzner on September 11,1965, and she survives. Also 5 children, Todd (Kristi) in Port Huron; Troy, St.Ignace; Travis (Marina), St.Ignace; Theresa (Ron) France, ST.Ignace, and Tammy Fitzpatrick, ST.Ignace. sisters, Betty Nigneaux, Rudyard, Barb Baren, E. Tawas. 11 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Also a half sister, Sharon, Brown in South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Gerald, and a sister, Ursula Smith. He will be soreley missed by the community, as he was very well loved by those who knew him.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, July 31 at 12 noon at St.Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church with Fr. Frank Ricca, Fr. Cory Litzner and Fr. Norbert Landreville officiatung. He will be placed in the Cript in Gros Cap Cemetery later.
Visitation will be at the church from 10 until service time.
